Jordan entered the World Cup having not won a match since a 3-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in an international friendly on Sept. 9. Following its World Cup opener against Austria, it is still searching for a win after a 3-1 loss last Wednesday. Austria took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Ali Olwan equalized in the 50th minute off an assist from Noor Al-Rawabdeh. Unfortunately for Jordan, defender Yazan Al-Arab scored an own goal in the 76th minute to give Austria a 2-1 lead before Austria added a penalty in the 12th minute of stoppage time to seal the victory.
Algeria entered the tournament with momentum after posting a 3-1-0 record in its previous four matches dating back to March 27, but it was shut out 3-0 by Lionel Messi and Argentina last Tuesday. Algeria competed well for stretches of the match, but with just one shot on target and Messi recording a hat trick, it wasn’t enough to overcome one of the tournament favorites.
With both Jordan and Algeria losing their opening matches and still searching for their first points of the tournament, Monday night’s matchup carries significant importance. Argentina’s victory over Austria earlier Monday puts additional pressure on both teams as they battle to remain in contention for a spot in the Round of 32.

Monday night is a must-win match for both teams. While both are coming off losses, Algeria entered this year’s World Cup in better form than Jordan and, despite being shut out by Argentina, competed reasonably well against one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
The key for both teams will be creating quality scoring chances. Jordan matched Austria with four shots on target and 11 total shots but found the back of the net only once. Algeria managed just seven shots, one shot on target, and three attempts from inside the box against Argentina, so it will need to generate more opportunities if it wants to leave with three points.
Based on each team’s opening result, this match could easily turn into a low-scoring affair or even a draw. Still, Algeria appears to have the slight edge heading into Monday night’s matchup.
