The Tampa Bay Rays (40-25) head west to take on the Los Angeles Angels (27-42) Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.

It has been a very different season for these two clubs. The Rays enter Friday atop the American League standings, while the Angels own the worst record in the AL. Tampa Bay recently hit a rough patch, losing 10 of 13 games, but hopes that stretch is behind it after completing a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox earlier this week.

The Angels are hoping they’re beginning to turn things around as well. Los Angeles is coming off a series win over Houston and has gone 10-8 over its last 18 games.

Friday’s pitching matchup features Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan, who is 6-3 with a 2.85 ERA this season, against Angels left-hander Sam Aldegheri. The 24-year-old Aldegheri is making just his fifth appearance and second start of the 2026 season. Ranked as the Angels’ No. 16 prospect by MLB Pipeline, he owns a 5.12 career ERA across 11 major league appearances since 2024.

Here’s a featured pick for Friday night’s series opener in Anaheim:

Rays vs. Angels Best Bet: Shane McClanahan Over 5.5 Strikeouts

Shane McClanahan isn’t typically considered a high-strikeout pitcher, but he draws a favorable matchup against an Angels lineup that enters Friday with 649 strikeouts, the most in MLB.

Los Angeles has played 69 games this season, meaning it is averaging more than nine strikeouts per game. That lack of contact has been a major factor in the club’s struggles and 15-game deficit below .500.

McClanahan, meanwhile, has recorded 59 strikeouts in 60 innings across 12 starts, averaging just under five strikeouts per outing. He has gone over 5.5 strikeouts in three of his last five starts, including six punchouts in his most recent appearance. Overall, however, he has eclipsed the mark in only four starts this season.

It’s a tight line, but considering how often the Angels strike out, McClanahan reaching six or more strikeouts is a reasonable play.
